After a long period of Austerity Lord Shiva got impressed with their devotion and he gave them a choice – of getting a intelligent son with a short life span or a son with low intelligence but a long life span. Mrikandu rishi accepted the first offer from Lord Shiva, and soon they were blessed with a boy named Markandeya, an intelligent boy but having a short life span of only 16 years.

However, when their son was about to approach to the age of 16 years, they started becoming depressed of this issue. Markandeya unable to understand their problem. When Markandeya insisted, then his parents told the whole incident to him. After listening to his parents, Markandeya then started doing his own austerity in front of Shiva linga. When Lord Yama’s messenger came to him on his 16th birthday to take him away, they found him too busy in the prayers and unable complete their task.

After a log time, Lord Yama himself came to take him away. However, the boy remained stubborn and wrapped his arms around the shiva linga and surrendered himself for the mercy of Lord Shiva Yama who was determined in his task to take the child away, he removed his noose towards the child. But, instead the noose fell on to the ling. This made Lord Shiva very angry, that he appeared out from the ling and punished the Yama by killing him.

However, killing of the Yama could disrupt the whole universe, so Lord Shiva gave life back to Yama on insist of several other Gods but with the only one condition, that the Yama will not take away the life of the boy.
